Cleaning and Maintaining your Titanium Jewellery

Here at Ti2 Titanium, we often get asked how to clean jewellery. Many people do not realise it's quite simple and quick to do! If you have particularly sensitive skin, it’s especially important to keep on top of cleaning away a build-up of things that may cause irritation. Sometimes something as basic as shampoo or conditioner collecting on an ear stud can upset sensitive ears.

Over time you may find that your once bright and colourful titanium jewellery may now seem dull and lacklustre. Often this is not the colour ‘wearing off,’ but an accumulation of natural oils produced by the skin and a build-up of dirt. The grooves, and intricate designs may accumulate a collection of soaps, lotions skin cells, and other dirty particles from everyday life. A build-up of dirt can diminish a diamonds sparkle, so be sure to keep the back holes of your gemstones clean!

Cleaning

Before you begin cleaning your jewellery, always put the plug in the sinks drain. The last thing you want is for your precious piece to fall into oblivion.

Grab these three common household items.

  1. Washing up liquid
  2. A soft bristle toothbrush
  3. Kitchen towel

Use warm running water and hold your jewellery under it. Pop some washing up liquid onto the jewellery or on the toothbrush and give a gentle scrub. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, focusing on grooves, holes, backs of earrings, and detailing. Do not forget to clean the earring butterfly backs too!

Rinse off all remaining soap and carefully dry the item with kitchen roll. Watch out for any remaining water droplets on coloured titanium, this can easily leave water marks. If this does happen, you can clean them off again using the same cleaning process. Some people find using warm air helps to dry up any hard-to-reach wet spots. You can use a hairdryer, a crafters heat tool or heat gun, just be mindful that titanium can get very hot!

Now your titanium jewellery should be sparkling clean and eye catching!

Maintenance

It’s a good idea to regularly check your jewellery, and you don’t have to be a qualified jeweller to do so! Simple checks can prevent accidental losses happening and they only take moments to check over.

Here’s a list of things to check:

  • Clasps on chains and bracelets – do they open and close effectively?
  • Gemstones and Diamonds – Are they tightly set? Do they move or wobble in any way?
  • Anodising – Does your coloured titanium look patchy or dirty – see our cleaning tips above!
  • Rings – are they too loose or too tight? Do they easily slide off when you have cold hands?
  • Butterfly stud backs – are they gripping the ear stud tightly? You can easily tighten them up by giving them a little squeeze between your thumb and index finger.
