Meet Barry & Sally Milburn
Having worked for over 35 years within the international jewellery industry, Barry & Sally are accomplished designers who are resolutely passionate about jewellery. Starting Prism Design in 1980 they have been responsible for the design and development of Prism Designs own label collections, bespoke service and the evolution of the brands Ti2; Contour; & Gold, Silver & Gemstone Collections.
Barry & Sally studied Jewellery at the prestigious Central St Martin’s College in London, initially running a small studio by Carnaby Street producing bespoke jewellery for individual customers. They went on to open their first retail outlet called Scarab in Sevenoaks for a company called Simbol owned by Chris Pye and Jim Robinson who continued to support them for several years. Sally won a De Beers student design competition, which resulted in her ring designs being produced by Cartier. They also received a helping hand from the renowned Clive Billings, – The Diamond Geezer of Dragons Den fame – who championed the Prism brand, introducing it to the trade with a very positive reaction.
Establishing a base in Bradford-on-Avon, Barry & Sally founded their own design studio & manufacturing workshop, working directly with retail jewellers who purchased Prism‘s gem set and their gold wirework range which became highly popular internationally. Throughout this time Barry & Sally also supported young talent by nurturing students through apprenticeships and presenting at a variety of events, and to this day continue to work with young graduates through Prism Design’s mentoring programme.
Barry & Sally’s work frequently reference natural form and curves. Traditional handcrafted techniques together with the use of some of the most advanced equipment available, are evident in their designs and combine within a contemporary context, creating unexpected juxtapositions that reflect Prism’s brand ethos. Notable projects include: National Trust’s Anniversary Oak Leaf Symbol Brooch, Concord Ti2 Ring, Chris Boardman’s Wedding Rings, a Church Silver Chalice & a Diamond Encrusted Titanium Baton for well-known musical cartoonist Grenfell Jones – the baton was auctioned to raise funds for Cancer Research raising £2,500.
